How to Add Payment Details to Invoices

The Payment information section in the Visual Editor lets you control which payment details appear on your invoice. You can show the payment status, payment method (mode of payment), billing address, credit card details, discount codes, tracking information, and tax date — all with simple checkbox toggles. These fields help your customers see how they paid and give your invoices the financial detail needed for accounting and compliance.

Open the Payment information section

  1. Open the Invoice Falcon app from your Shopify Admin.
  2. Click Templates in the left navigation menu.
  3. Click on the template you want to customize (or click Edit on the template row).
  4. Scroll to the Visual editor section and click the Open visual editor button.
  5. In the left panel, click the Payment information section to expand it.

Available payment information fields

Each field has a checkbox to toggle it on or off. The fields are described below with their default states.

Payment status

  • Displays the Shopify financial status of the order (e.g., Paid, Pending, Refunded, Partially refunded, Authorized, Voided).
  • Appears in the order details area near the top of the invoice.
  • Off by default.

PAID

REFUNDED

Discount code

  • Displays the discount code used on the order (e.g., "SAVE10").
  • Appears in the payment details area at the bottom of the invoice, alongside the billing address and payment method.
  • Only shown if the order actually has a discount code applied. If no discount code exists, nothing is displayed.
  • Off by default.

Tracking company

  • Displays the fulfillment tracking company name (e.g., "DHL", "FedEx", "UPS").
  • Appears in the order details area near the top of the invoice.
  • Only shown if the order has fulfillment tracking information from Shopify.
  • Off by default.

Tracking numbers

  • Displays the fulfillment tracking number(s) associated with the order (e.g., "1234567890123").
  • Appears in the order details area near the top of the invoice.
  • Only shown if the order has tracking numbers from Shopify fulfillment.
  • Off by default.

Tax date

  • Displays the tax point date on the invoice, which uses the order creation date.
  • Required in some regions for VAT compliance where the tax point date must be explicitly stated on the invoice.
  • Off by default.

Payment address

  • Displays the full billing address of the customer in the Payment Information section at the bottom of the invoice. This includes the customer's name, company, street address, city, province, country, and postal code.
  • On by default.

Payment method

  • Displays the payment method or gateway name used for the order (e.g., "Manual", "Cash on Delivery", "Shopify Payments").
  • This is the mode of payment — it tells the customer how they paid for the order.
  • Appears in the Payment Information section at the bottom of the invoice, below the billing address.
  • On by default.

Credit card

  • Displays the masked credit card information used for the order (e.g., "Visa: •••• •••• •••• 4242").
  • Appears in the Payment Information section at the bottom of the invoice, below the payment method.
  • Only shown if the order was paid with a credit card. For other payment methods (cash on delivery, bank transfer, etc.), nothing is displayed.
  • On by default.

Tip: For B2B or wholesale invoices, enable Payment status, Payment method, and Payment address to give your customers a complete record of the transaction. For retail invoices, you may want to keep it simple with just the payment method.

Enable or disable payment information fields

  1. In the Payment information section, check or uncheck the fields you want to show or hide on the invoice.
  2. Review the live preview on the right to confirm the changes.
  3. Click Save changes at the top of the Visual Editor.

Note: The Payment Information section at the bottom of the invoice only appears if at least one of Payment address or Payment method is enabled. If both are disabled, the entire section is hidden.

Where payment fields appear on the invoice

Payment information fields appear in two locations on the invoice:

  • Order details area (top) — Payment status, Tracking company, Tracking numbers, and Tax date appear here alongside other order identification fields.
  • Payment Information section (bottom) — Payment address, Payment method, Credit card, and Discount code appear here in a dedicated section below the items table and totals.

Known limitations

  • Payment data comes from Shopify — all payment information is pulled directly from the Shopify order. You cannot manually enter or override payment details from within Invoice Falcon.
  • Credit card info is always masked — Shopify provides only masked card details (e.g., "•••• 4242"). Full card numbers are never displayed for security reasons.
  • Tracking info requires fulfillment — Tracking company and Tracking numbers only appear if the order has been fulfilled in Shopify with tracking information added.
  • Discount code shows code only — the discount code field shows the code text (e.g., "SAVE10"), not the discount amount. The discount amount is shown in the totals section.
  • Tax date uses order date — the Tax date field displays the order creation date. If your region requires a different tax point date, you will need to customize this in the Code Editor.
  • Settings are per-template — payment information settings are saved independently for each template.
  • Previously generated PDFs are not affected — changes only apply to invoices generated after saving.

Troubleshooting

Symptom

Likely Cause

Fix

Payment method shows blank

The order does not have a payment method recorded

Check the order in Shopify Admin to verify the payment gateway information exists

Credit card field is enabled but does not appear

The order was not paid with a credit card (e.g., cash on delivery, bank transfer)

This is expected. The credit card field only shows when a card was used

Tracking numbers do not appear

The order has not been fulfilled or tracking was not added

Fulfill the order in Shopify Admin and add tracking information, then regenerate the invoice

Discount code is enabled but not showing

No discount code was used on the order

This is expected. The field only renders when a discount code exists on the order

Payment Information section is completely missing

Both Payment address and Payment method are disabled

Enable at least one of these fields to show the Payment Information section

FAQs

Q: What payment methods are displayed?
A: The payment method field shows whatever Shopify records as the payment gateway — this can include "Shopify Payments", "Manual", "Cash on Delivery", "PayPal", "Bank Transfer", and others depending on your configured payment providers.

Q: Can I show multiple payment methods on one invoice?
A: Yes. If an order was paid using multiple methods, all payment methods are displayed as a comma-separated list.

Q: Is the credit card information secure?
A: Yes. Shopify only provides masked card details (e.g., "Visa: •••• •••• •••• 4242"). Full card numbers are never stored or displayed.

Q: Can I customize the "Payment Information" heading label?
A: Yes. Go to the Labels section in the Visual Editor and override the Payment Method label. For the section heading itself, edit the template code in the Code Editor.

Q: Does the payment status update if the order is refunded after the invoice is generated?
A: No. Previously generated PDFs are static. To show the updated payment status, regenerate the invoice after the refund.
